Welcome back to the part II of the Cardinal Rules series. Last week I covered all there is to know about clean skin & wrinkle free living.
Today, I shall tell you all about the über important exfoliation.
EXFOLIATE: Latin – exfoliare (to strip off leaves).
A little backstory; back in the 90’s was the first time I heard the term ‘microdermabrasion’. It looked painful and seemed drastic. That made me think… if that is a form of skin treatment that takes away the upper layers of epidermis to enable the fresh, younger skin to form, what would be a treatment that could prevent my skin from getting to the old leather shoe stage in the first place. I was in my early 20s and figured, if I start now I’ll be wrinkle free for super long time.
And then it hit me!
Exfoliate every day!
Not chemical peel exfoliate but gentle exfoliate. That way I would get rid of all environmental dirt, makeup and dead cells so my skin could regenerate over night and grow glorious baby butt skin!
At that moment I had one of those hypnagogic regressions A.K.A. flashbacks when my momma told me about loofah, yogurt and semolina. No, it was not a weird breakfast recipe but a simple, effective home made and almost always organic way to get rid of dead skin and everyday dirt.
I decided to get the loofah first. (Loofah, semolina, sugar, salt crystals mixed with honey etc. are physical exfoliants used by women for hundreds of years).
The next day I asked around and it was surprising that no one knew what loofah was?! Those I asked did, however, suggest I go to The Body Shop and ask them.
So I went.
And I found!
Loofah, the weird little cucumber/melon like fruit thang. When it ripens it becomes super fibrous and then left to dry on the vine it ends up the we needed to use as exfoliant. So I took it home, soaked it in warm water to soften and started exfoliating. Well, I was not a happy bunny. It did not feel lovely and it did not feel refreshing as Miss Flaky here forgot to use the cleanser! My momma’s Cardinal Rule #1! Jeez!?
So I grabbed a bar of soap as I run out of my Esteè Lauder foaming face cleanser, and that made a huge difference. The soap lathered the skin, water softened it and the loofah felt incredible. I massaged my skin with it in small circular motions all over my face, neck and décolletage.
This for me was the solution!
Over the years, I tried and still use many different ways to exfoliate but I do exfoliate every day and use yogurt every day. Momma Millie is 71 and her skin is incredible. She prefers yogurt to loofah. I shall tell you why next week because, my curious ones, yogurt deserves a whole chapter in this Odyssey.
And now! Here are my top physical and chemical exfoliants:
Semolina & Honey peel (physical): Get a cereal bowl, pour any runny honey to fill half of it and shove some fine, dry, semolina or sugar or salt or all all of it into the bowl to make a semi thick paste. Apply on face, neck and décolletage and leave for 3-5 minutes. Then gently massage in small circular motions for a few minutes and rinse with warm water.
Yogurt (chemical): Slap yogurt (not fruit) all over face, neck and décolletage, leave to dry then rinse with warm water.
Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant (physical) – This formula contains aluminum oxide crystals, lactic acid, and soothing botanicals to polish away dead skin cells, provide a radiant, healthy look, and smooth skin’s texture. It really does reduce appearance of fine lines, acne marks, and skin discolourations. I use this once every two weeks.ZELENS Micro-Refiner Bi-Active Exfoliator (physical) – Dr Marko is world’s leading expert in skin cancer and has developed his skin care range to help prevent it. Here is his recipe for successful exfoliating: Micro-Refiner Bi-Active Exfoliator. It really is a gentle skin renewal formula and it really does effectively remove dead surface cells. It combines enzymatic exfoliation with microdermabrasion using fine silica beads. It is infused with an advanced hydrating complex to help rehydrate skin and restore it’s hydrolipidic barrier. Leaves skin looking perfectly polished, smooth, refined and revitalised. Yum!
RÈVIVE Glycolic Renewal Peel Professional System (chemical) – You should use this system 1-2 times per week at night. Goes without saying avoid contact with eyes, lips, neck and irritated skin!
Step 1. Get a glycolic renewal peel cleansing pad and gently sweep the pad in circular motion across freshly cleansed skin… then
Step 2. get your glycolic renewal gel, squeeze a generous amount into palm of your hand and gently apply a liberal amount. Leave on for up to 5 minutes (it will tingle do not be alarmed) and then rinse off with warm water.
Whenever you are using any glycolic peel or any peel for that matter it is RIDICULOUSLY IMPORTANT to use and SPF moisturiser!
You can also use this on your chest, shoulders and backs of hands to achieve the same benefits.
NATURA BISSE Glyco Extreme Peel (chemical) – The Rolls Royce of chemical peels! All hail! It is an exfoliating treatment that is non-aggressive and highly effective. Its a Rolls Royce because they perfected something called the triple enzymatic exfoliation system. They use glycolic, malic, tartaric, citric, lactic and salicylic acids to eliminate the dead cells from the surface of the skin.
Then they added beta-lipoic acid because it acts on the deepest layers of the skin to stimulate the enzymes responsible for the natural exfoliation process. And THEN they incorporated Exfolyactil Mimetic. That’s a clever little new age invention, the latest-generation peptide that removes dead cells, promoting renewal of the skin’s surface. The skin is instantly transformed, extraordinarily firm and luminous. Magic.
The story goes that Señor Ricardo Fisas Mulleras, founder or Natura Bissè, was so taken by Jacqueline Bisset’s beauty that it inspired him to create this incredible skin care range so every woman would have a chance to look as elegant and etherial as Jacqueline.
Señor Ricardo, we are grateful.
