THE FOLLOWING IS A TRUE STORY. THE NAMES AND IDENTIFYING DETAILS HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO PROTECT THE PRIVACY OF INDIVIDUALS.
My name is Lauren and I am a makeup artists working in a lovely department store for one of the top makeup brands.
The following happened on Saturday 22 July 2017.
Customer: Hi, can you tell me about your foundation.
Me: Of course madam, what would you like to know?
Customer is looking at me like I asked her to take her top off
Customer: Well, can you tell me what colour I am.
Me: We always do our best to colour match by testing it on customer’s face, so if you have time now, I would be happy to do it for you.
Customer: No, I don’t want to take my makeup off.
It’s worth saying that the amount of foundation the customer had on her face was impressive and not in a good way.
Me: Perhaps, one day, when you are less busy you could come back with no makeup on and we could do it then? I would be happy to make an appointment for you.
Customer: No, I am not gonna buy it anyway.
Me: Well thank you for stopping by.
Customer picking up a random bottle of foundation
Customer: Is this your most popular darker foundation?
Me : No madam, we don’t have the most popular darker foundation. Each individual customer is matched to the shade/tone of the foundation that is closest to their skin tone.
Customer: But is this too dark for me?
Me: It is difficult for me to tell as it is in the bottle. The best thing would be if we could test it on your skin.
Customer: Whatever. I don’t want to be served by you.
